The National Air and Space Museum originally opened in 1976 to memorialize the development of both aviation and spaceflight. The Institution’s founder acquired the first collection with 20 kites and has grown to over 60,000 objects on display. Currently, the Museum exhibits 100 interactive and digital experiences, including a solar system tour, a mock-up of the International Space Station (ISS) cupola, and learning what it would be like to walk on another planet. After many years of being open, the Museum closed in October 2018 for a 7-year renovation. The General Contractors elected for this project were Clark/Smoot/Consigli. The renovations started in phases, de-installing the artifacts and striping the walls down to the steel. The upgrades will create a more interactive and accessible experience for guests with hearing, vision, and mobility disabilities. The Museum will also feature hundreds of new artifacts and other displays from famous shows and movies.

The National Air and Space Museum has an array of our Fireproofing Materials applied to this project. Renovations were underway, and in 2019 recognized applicator Metro Dynamic Construction Specialties, Inc. started to apply our CAFCO / ISOLATEK Wet Mix, Spray Applied Fireproofing Material (SFRM), Intumescent Fireproofing Material (IFRM), and Rigid Board Fireproofing material. Isolatek International’s broad range of passive fireproofing systems provides solutions for any project conditions, ensuring guests’ safety and protection in the event of a fire. Each product endured rigorous testing, certifying exceptional thermal performance, superior durability, fire resistance ratings, cost-effectiveness, ease of application, and LEED building credits. Both local representation and an in-house technical team support every product sold. The products applied at the National Air and Space Museum were CAFCO 400 AC / ISOLATEK Type 400 AC, CAFCO SprayFilm WB 5 / ISOLATEK Type WB 5, ISOLATEK Qwik-Set, CAFCO-BOARD / ISOLATEK Type CB. Parts of the exhibit are now open, and the Museum plans to be fully operational by 2025.
