In UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital (UCH), a part of Anschutz Medical Campus, is an 11-story tower, approximately 658,585 square feet. Built to meet the growing demand for a complex medical care facility, the UCHealth Tower 3 will provide up to 228 inpatient beds, 120 beds in the intensive care unit, and medical/surgical beds. The project will include nine operating rooms and space for renovations or expansions in other parts of the hospital, including the emergency department. There will be two pedestrian bridges to connect the buildings. Rolling Plains Construction Colorado applied CAFCO BLAZE-SHIELD II HS, CAFCO SprayFilm WB 5, and CAFCO SprayFilm WB 4 to the steel on this project. The benefits of spraying ISOALTEK INTERNATIONAL’S products are cost savings, high yield, and easy application.
CAFCO BLAZE-SHIELD II HS has excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties, helping reduce heating costs and eliminating the need to purchase noise abatement products. All of which benefit the hospital to become energy efficient and to obtain LEED credits. CAFCO BLAZE-SHIELD II HS meets major fire protection specifications for commercial structures, including ANSI/ UL 263, ASTM E119, and CAN/ ULC-S101, for up to 4-hour fire resistance ratings. When fully cured, CAFCO BLAZE-SHIELD II HS is the only commercial density product classified as “investigated for exterior use” by Underwriters Laboratories, allowing it to remain exposed to extreme weather conditions during the construction cycle. The Tower was exposed from April through May when the weather was still wet and cold, CAFCO BLAZE-SHIELD II HS withstood it. Our CAFCO SprayFilm WB 5 was applied to steel beams inside the building and on the pedestrian bridges’ exposed steel, while our CAFCO SprayFilm WB 4 intumescent coating, combined with CAFCO SprayFilm Topseal®, was applied to the steel on the outside of the UCH Tower. CAFCO SprayFilm Topseal is our water-based system investigated by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for use in exterior applications applied overtop of CAFCO SprayFilm WB 4.
The ease of application and fireproofing ratings were not the only reasons to spray these products. The hospital is committed to achieving U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® Gold certification. Our CAFCO BLAZE-SHIELD II HS has exceptionally high recycled content (56% pre-consumer) and other environmentally friendly characteristics that provide significant LEED credits. CAFCO SprayFilm WB 5 and CAFCO SprayFilm WB 4 are both LOW VOC contributing to LEED Credits. Each product adds to the effectiveness of the building’s sustainability with our Advancing Passive Fireproofing Technology.
